LDI Letter Writing Campaign: Merck

Note: Merck is listed on LDI’s boycott list as of January 17, 2010 for their support of Planned Parenthood. I cannot guarantee that Merck will continue to be listed on LDI’s boycott list at the time you read this blog post. Please visit Life Decisions International for confirmation if the company is still on the boycott list.

About Merck & Company Inc.

Merck produces several “health care” related products. These products include: A&D Ointment (infant care), Dr. Scholl’s, Tinactin (personal care: feet), Claritin, Clarinex, Nasonex, Singulair (nasal/respiratory), Coppertone (skin), Zocor (cholesterol). If you currently take any of these products I encourage you to look for alternative products, and write Merck about your boycott of their products until they change their policy of supporting Planned Parenthood. Merck has also been on record in support of the current health care reform. Merck also supports the scientifically debatable/political issue of so called man-caused climate change. Below is a quote I took directly from the Merck website about their mission to customers.

“Our business is preserving and improving human life and animal health. All of our actions must be measured by our success in achieving this goal. Above all, we value our ability to serve patients who can benefit from the appropriate use of our products and services. We are dedicated to providing the highest level of professional excellence and health delivery systems. We strive to identify the most critical needs of health care professionals and consumers, and we devote our resources to meeting those needs.”

Dear Mr. Dick Clark:

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter; I know that you are a very busy man and that your time is very valuable to you. I am writing as a consumer and a citizen concerned about Merck’s support of Planned Parenthood. Life Decisions International has listed Merck as a company that supports Planned Parenthood, and as a result Merck is listed on their boycott list. Life Decisions International is a well respected, non-profit organization dedicated to exposing the radical agenda of Planned Parenthood and identifying those companies that support Planned Parenthood. As a consumer and partner of Life Decisions International, I find your support of Planned Parenthood disheartening. Why am I and hundreds of thousands of other citizens and consumers so opposed to Planned Parenthood?

• Planned Parenthood commits more abortions than any other single entity
o As someone who has personally met women who have had an abortion as well as women who were abortion vulnerable but chose life, I can sympathize with these women and their often difficult circumstances. However, the act of abortion is a grave evil because it takes the life of an innocent human being. Abortion is not health care because pregnancy is not a disease. Despite this fact, Planned Parenthood, an organization that claims to be for women’s health, relies on abortions to stay in business. Abortion is a core initiative of theirs, and it is an essential financial driver of their business. As a company that prides itself on preserving and improving human life rather than destroying human life, I would expect that Merck is absolutely opposed to abortion and Planned Parenthood’s promotion of abortion.
• Planned Parenthood is not “Pro-women” or “Pro-Choice” as they claim.
o Planned Parenthood prides itself on being “pro-women” and “pro-choice,” but in reality they only support women who share their values and make choices in which Planned Parenthood approves. Planned Parenthood opposes laws that give parents a right to know if their daughter plans to have an abortion, and they oppose “women’s right to know” legislation. Planned Parenthood very rarely refers women to pregnancy centers or adoption agencies that can provide women with information and support that offers women an alternative choice to abortion. Planned Parenthood often discourages women from seeing an ultrasound of their baby. Planned Parenthood does not desire these women have a choice, they desire that these women feel that they have no choice but abortion. Planned Parenthood also fails to acknowledge or inform women about the dangers of abortion including the research from dozens of studies that found a link between breast cancer and abortion.

According to the Merck Code of Conduct as it relates to its customers, the overarching goal of your business is to preserve and improve human life. Planned Parenthood neither preserves nor improves human life, and your association with Planned Parenthood seriously damages your credibility and reputation as a company that strives to preserve and improve human life. As a consumer, I will not support any company that openly supports Planned Parenthood, and I will advise all my coworkers, family, friends, and strangers alike to do the same. Until your support of Planned Parenthood is withdrawn, I will support those products offered from your competitors whom have not thrown their support behind the deadly organization of Planned Parenthood. Because I believe in the good intentions of you and your company to improve and preserve human life, I presume that you were unaware of the radical life threatening agenda of Planned Parenthood. After all, Planned Parenthood goes against the very core values and mission your organization claims to live by and represent. I respectfully request that you immediately discontinue your support for Planned Parenthood. If you believe that your organization should not be included on the boycott list or if you want to know what steps need to be taken in order to be taken off the boycott list, please contact Life Decisions International. Until Life Decisions International removes Merck from the boycott list, I cannot morally justify supporting your organization. In an effort to preserve credibility and respect from your consumers, employees, and community at large, I expect that you will live up to the code of conduct and values you and your company claim to uphold. Once again thank you for your time, and I look forward to the day when Merck is no longer on Life Decisions International’s boycott list.

Sincerely,

Michael J. Duquaine
